Is your Grievance Handling in place? Your employees can be grieving

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

Suddenly Disney is out of magic, Paris is no longer romantic,

New York doesn’t stand up anymore,

The Chinese wall is no longer a fortress, and Mecca is empty.

Hugs & kisses suddenly become weapons, and not visiting parents & friends becomes an act of love.

Suddenly you realize that power, beauty & money are worthless, and can't get you the oxygen you're fighting for.

The world continues its life and it is beautiful. It only puts humans in cages. I think it's sending us a message:

"You are not necessary. The air, earth, water and sky without you are fine. When you come back, remember that you are my guests. Not my masters.”

-Haroon Rashid

This is a poem that has got quite a bit of attention on social media these days. While this brings out a general message to society, if you think about it, there is much relevance for an HR head to consider as their greatest assets are in cages.

We all are fighting the battle of Covid 19 one way or another. While some face it physically, another faces it financially. Whether it is large multinationals to the daily wage earner, it’s a battle of survival. But what about those that face it mentally. While companies focus on their financial sustenance, what they do need to consider is the wellbeing of their employees as well. The present circumstances make organisations highly dependable on their human resources. Hence employees with the right state of mind goes hand in hand with the running of the organisations.

You may wonder how is this relevant as your employees seem fine. But it’s not been easy. Due to lockdown, many employees are stuck in their house all alone with not a single person to even talk to. Some have no food, while some have no money. Reduction in wages and salary cuts have caused employees to stress out on how they would provide for their families and cater to their basic needs, home schooling has made working parents juggle way more than they could handle, there are some who work way more than they used to due to organisational demands of completing projects ahead of time, another set of employees find the pressures of payment collection and sales targets. The list goes on and according to the Financial Times, with isolation, anxiety and burnout on the rise, many organisations and employers are coming up with various strategies to support the mental health of their employees and hear out their grievances. Employees have reached out for psychological help with a radical increase in the number of appoints, initiation of hotline numbers just so that individuals can have a conversation and the most creative initiatives possible.

According to Mercer, 43% of workers thought their company had addressed psychological issues, whereas only 15% had surveyed staff to understand their needs.

It’s not easy to change the organisational culture and come up with such strategies overnight. But a feasible option is to have an effective HR solution with a comprehensive Grievance Handling Module.
