Charles H. Ferguson, General Manager APAC at Globalization Partners, explains why remote work has made the world one talent pool, and why small companies can now compete with Google for it. He covers building brand equity, the DICE model for remote hires, and the compliance work that has to come first.

WATCH THE RECORDING AND LEARN HOW TO

1. Build a brand that top candidates choose

2. Assess remote hires with the DICE model

3. Hire across borders without compliance risk

Key takeaways

Watch from 03:07

Invest in brand equity. If the whole world is your talent pool, small and mid-sized companies can compete with Google or Microsoft. What sets you apart is how visible your brand, culture and values are.

Watch from 10:16

Revisit your mission, vision and values. Few companies have done this since the pandemic. Candidates want employers whose values match theirs, plus diversity and hybrid working, not just salary.

Watch from 14:20

Hire remote talent with DICE. Look for Determination to overcome obstacles, Insights drawn from too much information, Curiosity to keep learning, and Engagement with empathy across every level and culture.

Watch from 20:26

Think talent arbitrage, not labor arbitrage. Emerging markets are no longer just for cheaper labor. Oxford Economics found that in 2021, for the first time, the E7 had more university-educated people under 35 than the G7.

Watch from 22:31

Plan compliance before you hire. Understand local contracts, statutory benefits, probation, severance and data rules. Check salary data across three or four sources before you make an offer.

Watch from 34:46

HR's to-do list for a disrupted world. Reskilling, health and wellness, EQ training for leaders, a competency framework beyond the job, automation, updated rewards and remote-work policies aligned with IT.

Q&A highlights

It depends, but the future of work is choice. Mix office and non-office days and let people choose what works for them. Many younger workers will come in for mentoring and connection, but if you mandate it, be ready to lose talent.
Manage on outcomes, not attendance. Protect yourself with non-compete, IP and conflict-of-interest clauses in a locally compliant contract, through your own entity, an employer of record or a reputable law firm. These are far easier to enforce with full-time employees than with freelancers.
Yes. If you don't document it, you can't enforce it. It is part of a wider list: reskilling, wellness, leadership EQ training, digitizing processes and aligning remote-work policies with IT.
Document and digitize as much as you can, run knowledge-capture and mentoring programs, connect younger and older generations, and stay open to boomerang employees who regret leaving.
